Am I eligible?

Eligibility for Counseling Services

CAPS provides short-term counseling at no cost to UC Davis registered students.

The service you receive is based upon a determination of your therapeutic goals and CAPS resources. If CAPS is unable to meet your goals, referral resources will be identified for you.


Is CAPS a confidential service?

Our Services are Confidential

CAPS staff adhere to state laws and ethical standards which require that all client information is held in confidence.

To provide effective service, your therapist may discuss your case with other CAPS staff (i.e. their supervisors or colleagues). Also, CAPS staff may consult with medical staff at Cowell Student Health Center according to state law for discretionary disclosure to qualified medical providers as needed for diagnosis and treatment.

All confidential client information will be disclosed to others only with your written consent or in accordance with state law and University policy.

State law requires that health and mental health professionals reports certain situations, such as suspicion of child or elder abuse, or serious danger to self or others.


How do I schedule an appointment?

To schedule an appointment for initial consultation, please call CAPS (752-0871) during regular office hours. This initial intake appointment will help you clarify your counseling needs and direct you to appropriate services.

Students who have an urgent need to receive counseling services can come in to CAPS and will be seen as soon as possible.

If you are unable to keep an appointment, please call Reception to cancel 24 hours in advance. If staff cannot keep an appointment with you, Reception will attempt to contact you.

Our staff welcome your contact. We also value your privacy. Please consider the following information prior to sending us your e-mail:

E-Mail is not an appropriate medium for personal counseling. If you are a UC Davis student seeking personal counseling, please visit our office at 219 North Hall Đor- call (530) 752-0871 to schedule an appointment with the counselor.

Our staff do not respond to inquiries from our clients regarding specific counseling issues. Confidentiality is essential to the counseling process and cannot be assured with e-mail.

We cannot guarantee that your e-mail remains confidential. While we will do our best to keep your communication private, our university administration, like many other employers, reserve the right to monitor our e-mail usage and might therefore see the text of your message. If you are in any way concerned about the contents of your e-mail being read by someone other than the person you are contacting, you might consider alternate forms of communication.

Staff may not read e-mail on a regular, daily basis. Also, you have no way of knowing if staff is unavailable due to illness, vacation, or other reasons. This means that your message may not be read immediately. If time is of particular concern for you, please consider calling our office instead at (530) 752-0871.

CAPS is a multiculturally and educationally diverse group of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, family counselors, doctoral interns and peer counselors.

We are an experienced staff committed to assisting students and enriching the university community through providing a broad variety of educational programs, psychological consultation and other types of university service.

Tragedy in Haiti

Information for students, parents and faculty/staff regarding the tragedy in Haiti

The earthquake devastation in Haiti may have directly or indirectly impacted your life. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) would like UC Davis students to know that our office is available for support.

We are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m to provide counseling services to students who are experiencing loss, anxiety, or other difficulties related to this tragic event.

The recent 24-7 news reports about swine flu infections have resulted in anxiety and concern for many members of the campus community.
